Telephone Interview

For convenience sake and to weed out the unsuitable candidates we recommend that you carry out your first interview over the phone. Keep the conversation short. There may be a lot of nannies or babysitters to contact. Refer back to your list and ask questions that relate to it so you don’t lose track of what it is you are looking for in a nanny or babysitter. Make sure that you give the nanny an opportunity to talk to see if she is agreeable and whether she sounds like someone you could trust and get on with. It is important no matter how qualified someone sounds to go with your instinct.
However, as some people are not very articulate on the phone, make sure you to take nerves into account so as to not rule out a potentially great candidate.

Sample Questions

  • Initiated the conversation by giving the interviewee a brief job description then begin to ask your questions.
  • How old are you?
  • Where do you live?
  • Years of experience working with children?
  • What can you offer in the way of care to my children?
  • When could you start?
  • What are your salary expectations?

If from these few questions that the candidate is not suitable for your family simply, say thank you and close the conversation to move on to your next phone interview.

If the conversation went well and you have a good feeling about this nanny or babysitter make sure you set up a date and time for a face to face interview. Make sure you ask them to bring with them:

  • ID
  • Resume
  • Written references
  • Valid work permit
  • Evidence of the completion of a First Aid Course
  • Driving license if the position requires one
